The Benefits of Exercise
Exercise has many benefits. In addition to helping you stay in shape and lead a healthy lifestyle, exercise can also help to reduce stress. It helps your stress hormones, gives you more energy, and improves your mood. The holiday season brings a lot of stress along with it, and stress has a lot of negative health consequences that exercise can help to alleviate.
The current exercise recommendation from the American College of Sports Medicine for adults is 150 minutes of exercise per week. This can be broken down into 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise, 5 days per week or 20-60 minutes of vigorous intensity exercise, 3 days per week. The minutes spent exercising per day can be continuous (one session) or cumulative (broken up into smaller sessions).
Even if you are unable to tolerate the recommended dosage of exercise per week, you can still get health benefits from a small amount of exercise. Before beginning an exercise program, you should check with your physician to get clearance to begin. Your physical therapist can also assist with helping you find exercises that are safe for you and your condition, to prevent further injury.
