Tips for Improving Compliance with Home Exercise Programs
When coming up with your New Year’s Resolutions, keep in mind your home exercise program. Your home exercise program plays an important role in your recovery. Typically, physical therapy appointments are 45-60 minutes 2-3 times per week. The amount of exercise that is done the rest of the week can have a big impact on a patient’s progress. Here are some tips to help improve compliance with home exercise programs with a busy schedule:
- Schedule time to do your exercises like you would any other appointment: Block off time on a calendar, in a planner, set a phone alarm, etc. Treat that time set aside like any other appointment, keeping in mind how difficult it is to find time to reschedule.
- Take a stretch break: Take breaks during the work day to perform stretches. This will allow for a mental break while you get your exercises done at the same time. Feel free to keep a set of weights or bands at your desk if you are able!
- Take a commercial break: Take advantage of commercial breaks during your favorite TV shows to perform your exercises.
- Wake up earlier: If you are a morning person, give yourself extra time in the morning to perform your exercises. You may find that getting one of your exercise sessions done in the morning gives you extra energy throughout the day!
These are just a few suggestions. Finding strategies that work best for you is important to keeping you on track!
