When You Can’t Swallow…

Do you or someone you know suffer from difficulties swallowing food or liquids? Maybe you know someone who had a stroke and coughs a lot at mealtime, or has to eat a “soft” diet or drink a thickened liquid. This condition is known as DYSPHAGIA.

Dysphagia means difficulty chewing and swallowing, and can be caused by many medical conditions such as a stroke, brain injury, degenerative disease such as Parkinson’s, or generalized weakness as result of a surgery or prolonged illness. Dysphagia can lead to very serious issues such as choking, aspiration, aspiration-pneumonia, and weight loss.

Here at Brighton Physical Therapy, our speech-language pathologist (SLP) is very experienced in treating swallowing disorders. Our SLP is also trained and certified in a modality called Vital Stim. Vital Stim is a type of neuromuscular electrical stimulation that is applied to the neck and/or face to strengthen swallowing muscles that have become weakened from stroke or other disease/injury. It is a simple, safe, and highly effective treatment to help individuals regain ability to safely chew and swallow their favorite foods.

If you or a family member struggles with chewing and swallowing as result of neurological or other condition, give our clinic a call to set up a free phone consultation with our speech-language pathologist to determine if you or they may benefit from swallow therapy.
